A South African woman who began serving a more than 30-year sentence in a Thai prison four years ago for drug running, has had her sentence reduced by 20 years.

Ashley Oosthuizen was originally sentenced to 100 years behind bars, but this was reduced to 33 years and subsequently to 13 years and seven months.

Oosthuizen was working in a coffee shop in Thailand when she signed for a package delivered to her workplace. It contained 260g of MDMA, a party drug. She was initially convicted of international drug smuggling, but this was subsequently downgraded to drug possession, which has seen her sentence reduced.

She has been in jail since 2021, meaning she now has another eight years to serve. She also faces the prospect of having to pay a fine of R370,000 on her release.
