Sudan has cut diplomatic ties with the UAE, accusing the Gulf state of backing the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

This comes after three days of attacks by the RSF on Port Sudan, which is currently the country’s de facto national capital.

The Sudanese government said the UAE had been giving financial, military, and political support to the RSF, a claim which the UAE denies. Sudan has closed its embassy in the UAE and withdrawn its ambassador.

The civil war in Sudan has been raging for two years, and has resulted in the deaths of at least 150,000 people.

Up to now Port Sudan has been one of the safest cities in the country, but the recent attack saw drone strikes on the airport, a power station, and a hotel. The Sudanese government blamed the RSF, which has not as yet admitted responsibility.

The Sudanese government and the RSF have both been accused of war crimes.
