Taiwan conducted tests with a newly acquired US rocket system that has garnered widespread attention in the defence of Ukraine.
Twenty-nine units of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, were purchased by Taiwan, with 11 delivered in 2024, and the rest scheduled to be provided over the coming year.
The HIMARS has a range of some 300 kilometers, and is capable of hitting targets in China, and in a war, would probably be so deployed.
The test-firing was performed by a US-trained team of Taiwanese operators at the Jiupeng test facility on the island’s Pacific coast. US personnel were also in attendance in case guidance was needed.
