The Liberal-National Coalition in Australia is likely to split after working together for over 80 years.

This comes after the centre-right Coalition lost in a landslide to the Labor Party in an election held earlier this month.

The leader of the National Party, David Littleproud, said his party needed to go on a journey of “rediscovery”. However, he added that he hoped the parties would reconcile and noted that there had been breakups and then reconciliations between the two parties through the course of the 20th century.

The leader of the Liberal Party, Sussan Ley, said: “Whilst we have enormous respect for David Littleproud and his team, it is disappointing that the National Party has taken the decision to leave the Coalition.”

The current disagreement arose out of some policy differences, particularly over climate change and energy policy.
