Consumer inflation was 2.8% in April, slightly above the rate recorded in March, but still below the target rate of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), which is between three and six percent.

Annual inflation in March was 2.7%, while month-on-month inflation was 0.3% in April.

Broken down by province, annual inflation was lowest in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, which both recorded annual inflation of 2.3%, while the Western Cape recorded the highest inflation at 3.5%.

The primary drivers of inflation in April, according to Stats SA, were housing, food, alcohol, and tobacco products.
