William Ruto, the President of Kenya, has apologised to Tanzania over tensions over the deportation of Kenyan activists from Tanzania.
A number of Kenyan lawyers and human rights activists have been expelled from Tanzania. They had been in the country to offer support to opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing charges of treason.
Some Kenyans have also taken to social media to mock Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her government. This led to Tanzanian MPs earlier this week accusing Kenyans of “cyberbullying” and of trying to meddle in Tanzania’s internal affairs.
On Wednesday Ruto was quoted as saying: “To our neighbours from Tanzania, if we have wronged you in any way, forgive us. If there is anything that Kenyans have done that is not right, we want to apologise.”
