A Russian book distributor has told bookshops that they must “return or destroy” books by American writer, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Briton, Bridget Collins.
Other writers whose books were on the list included the Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Zizek and Japan’s Ryu Murakami. A number of Russian writers were also on the list.
The distributor, BMM, said that booksellers could face “adverse consequences” if the books were not taken off shelves, claiming the books do not comply with Russia’s laws.
It said that booksellers had to either return the books or be able to prove they had been destroyed.
There has been increasing censorship in Russia in recent years, but this escalated since the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
