Karol Nawrocki has won the Polish presidential election, held on Sunday.
He narrowly beat the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, with Nawrocki winning 50.9% of the vote.
The two men emerged from the first round of voting last month as the leading candidates.
Trzaskowski came first in the first round, with 31.4% of the vote, with Nawrocki managing 29.5%.
Exit polls had initially shown that Nawrocki, a historian by profession, would lose to Trzaskowski, but as results came in overnight it became clear that Nawrocki would narrowly take the presidency.
Analysts believe Nawrocki will use his presidential powers to frustrate the pro-EU agenda of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Nawrocki ran on a platform of defending traditional Polish and Catholic values. He has said he supports Ukraine but does not want the war to escalate and does not support Ukraine’s accession to the EU or NATO.
Nawrocki officially ran as an independent, but was endorsed by the right-wing Law and Justice Party which is currently the single biggest party in the Polish parliament, although it is not currently in government.
According to the BBC, the Polish president has a largely ceremonial role. but the incumbent does have the power to veto legislation.
