M23, the militia allegedly backed by Rwanda and operating in the eastern DRC, allegedly killed civilians in its capture of Goma earlier this year, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
HRW released a report this week which documented incidents over a two-day period in February in the city of Goma. It said at least 21 people were killed by M23, with a number of people being killed execution-style, with a single shot to the head.
Unicef also said that there had been a five-fold increase in rape cases in February in the region. It said a third of the victims were children.
M23 seized control of the eastern DRC’s two biggest cities, Bukavu and Goma, in January.
