The British government is suing Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Premier League football club, Chelsea.
Abramovich sold the club in 2022 for £2.5 billion. However, he cannot access the money as he has been sanctioned by the UK and the EU because of his ties to the current Putin regime in Russia, which he has denied. The money from the sale is still legally his.
Abramovich was given special dispensation to sell the club if he could prove that he would not benefit from the sale.
The UK government wants the money to go to humanitarian aid in Ukraine, while Abramovich said he wants it to help “all victims of the war in Ukraine”.
Rachel Reeves, the chancellor of the exchequer, and David Lammy, the foreign secretary, have said they are still looking to reach an agreement but will go to the courts if necessary.
