Portuguese and German authorities have started searching for Madeleine McCann’s remains in the town of Lagos. They will be focusing on abandoned buildings and disused wells.
This search comes 18 years after McCann’s disappearance. She disappeared from a hotel room where she had been on holiday with her parents in Portugal in 2007. It become one of the world’s most prominent missing persons cases and sparked a Europe-wide police investigation.
Authorities have decided to concentrate on the town of Lagos, as that is where someone the German police suspect of having been involved in the disappearance was staying at the time of McCann’s disappearance.
In 2020 German authorities identified Christian Bruckner as a suspect in the case. Bruckner is currently serving time in a German prison for the rape of an American tourist in Portugal in 2005. Authorities believe he may be linked to the McCann case, but he has denied this.
