Senior Democratic Party figure and former party leader Helen Zille has confirmed she is considering an approach to make herself available as the DA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, according to Rapport.

The newspaper’s inquiries were prompted by “senior DA sources” indicating that Zille, who is the chairperson of the DA’s Federal Council, is being encouraged to make herself available as a mayoral candidate for Johannesburg in the 2026 municipal election.

Zille reportedly “emphasised that it’s far from a certainty that this will happen”.

She is quoted by Rapport as saying that if she did decide to go ahead, said would have to go through “the exact same gruelling selection process as everyone else” before being named the DA’s candidate.
