Two film studios, Disney and Universal, are suing an AI company, Midjourney, over its use of characters in work.

Midjourney is an image generation company and creates images using prompts from users.

The two studios said Midjourney was a “bottomless pit of plagiarism” and said that it had made “innumerable” copies of copyrighted characters, such as Darth Vader from Star Wars and Princess Elsa from Frozen.

Disney said that it hoped that AI could be used responsibly but that “piracy is piracy”.

Some legal analysts said that Midjourney could be off the hook if a court decided the use of the images fell under “fair use”.
