A Syrian doctor who fled to Germany in 2015 has been sentenced to life in prison for torturing political dissidents.

The man, identified only as Alaa M because of German privacy laws, was found guilty of killing two people and torturing another eight when he was working as a doctor at a military hospital in Homs in 2011 and 2012.

The man fled to Germany from Syria in 2015 and worked in the German healthcare system. He was first arrested in 2020. He denied the charges, saying that he was the victim of a conspiracy.

Alaa M was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and will spend the rest of his life in prison.

German authorities have charged a number of Syrians living in Germany with crimes committed in support of the Assad regime.
