The Notting Hill Carnival, the iconic celebration held annually in London every August and which celebrates Caribbean culture, is under threat due to a lack of funding.
The chair of the Carnival, Ian Comfort, has written to the British government in an attempt to secure funding. In the letter he said additional funding was “essential to safeguarding the future and public safety of this iconic event”.
This came after a safety review revealed that the carnival, which attracts about two million people, had “critical public safety concerns” which had to be addressed.
Comfort did not put a figure on the level of additional funding needed.
At last year’s Notting Hill Carnival, the London police force deployed about 7,000 officers.
