A peace deal which could end years of conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is close to being signed.

The deal between the DRC and Rwanda, and which was mediated between Qatar and the US, would see the “disengagement, disarmament and conditional integration” of groups fighting in the eastern DRC.

The deal also provides for a security framework which will help prevent future security flare-ups.

Sources said a deal had been drafted, with a final version to be signed next week.

Peace deals in the past between the DRC and Rwanda have failed to hold, so it remains to be seen whether this will finally bring peace to a region which has been racked by conflict for decades.
