A German court has lifted a ban imposed on Compact, a far-right magazine.

Last year the German government banned the magazine, saying that it undermined the German constitution through its attacks on minorities.

At the time, the then German interior minister, Nancy Faeser, said: “It is a central mouthpiece of the right-wing extremist scene. This magazine incites unspeakable hatred against Jews, against people with a migration background, and against our parliamentary democracy.”

This week a court in Leipzig said that while the magazine had published anti-constitutional content, this did not justify a ban. The court said much of the content in Compact was “exaggerated but permissible criticism”.

The German government cannot appeal the ruling.
