US President Donald Trump has threatened to block a deal for an American Football team’s new stadium unless they revert to their old name.
The Washington Commanders were previously known as the Washington Redskins, but they changed the name in 2020 after a review found it racist and offensive to Native Americans.
According to the BBC, a deal was agreed in April where the team would build a new 65,000-seater stadium on the site of their previous stadium, the RFK Stadium, which had been their home until 1997.
Writing on the Truth Social site, Trump said: “I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original Washington Redskins and get rid of the ridiculous moniker Washington Commanders, I won’t make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington.”
