LGBT Rights Advocacy China, a gay rights group which has been involved in many court cases in China pushing for greater rights for LGBT people, has announced that it will be shutting all operations and closing all its social media accounts.

The announcement was made in a statement sent out on WeChat.

Members of the group who spoke anonymously to the Associated Press due to fear of government punishment, refused to say why the group was closing down.

The disbanding of the group comes as the country’s ruling Communist Party tightens its grip on Chinese civil society.

There has been a wave of crackdowns on organisations across China which the party has described as ‘illegal social organisations’.
