A process akin to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) should be embarked on in the mining industry to deal with the lack of trust among stakeholders, Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive Neal Froneman urged ahead of today’s anniversary of the Marikana massacre eight years ago.

According to an IOL report, Froneman blamed the massacre that cost the lives of 34 miners on legacy and social issues as well as inter-union rivalry between the AMCU and NUM.

‘The industry is also part of the problem … We must acknowledge what went wrong. We need a reconciliation of the past much like the TRC did in the move to democracy.

‘That will get closure to some extent on this issue. We need justice to get closure or partial closure,’ he said.

The report said Froneman committed himself to acknowledging the past and proposed that one of the ways to move forward was to deal with the lack of trust among stakeholders.
