Three ANC eThekwini ward councillors have been arrested in the ongoing Durban Solid Waste (DSW) corruption saga.

The Democratic Alliance, on information reliably provided, indicates that councillors Mthokozisi Nojiyeza, Bhekokwakhe Phewa and Sduduzo Khuzwayo appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court late last week and were released on bail of R15 000 each. They will join former mayor Zandile Gumede, Mondli Mthembu, City Manager Sipho Nzuza and the other accused in court on 23 March 2021.

When Gumede was first arrested, court documents referred to the alleged involvement of 61 councillors in the scheme to defraud DSW. Four more ANC councillors were arrested in December of 2019. One accused has since died. This means 54 unnamed councillors remain uncharged.

The ANC has refused to investigate the hugely serious claim that over half of its councillors in eThekwini were apparently breaking the law. Formal requests to the Speaker of the council to initiate an investigation failed to achieve any results, but the Hawks have apparently not given up.

The DA has demanded justice, especially given the subsequent collapse of DSW and the impact this has had on service delivery. eThekwini is filthy and the department is completely dysfunctional.
