Fikile Mbalula has announced that the grace period for renewal of driver’s licences has been extended to 31 March next year.

The renewal grace period, set to expire on 31 August, was originally implemented to limit the number of people having to go to government offices during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, numerous problems plagued the licence renewal system, with many drivers being unable to secure a booking through the new online booking platform. In Gauteng alone, 437 819 expired licences are due for renewal.

Mbalula expressed confidence that the problems with the renewal system would be resolved next year.
