The cash-strapped African National Congress (ANC) has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help pay its staff.

The governing party would also increase membership fees and levies, according to a News24 report.

It quoted ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe as saying that the party’s national office had approved the initiatives.

The crowdfunding appeal was posted on Twitter:

On Thursday, ANC staff shut down party offices around the country to back demands that unpaid wages be settled.

On Wednesday, ANC general manager Febe Potgieter wrote to staff to say that neither their outstanding July salaries nor their August salaries would be paid on time.

ANC treasurer-general (TG), Paul Mashatile, said: ‘We want to assure everybody that our challenges will be resolved, based on the number of initiatives approved by the national offices.’
