Nyanga in Cape Town has been removed by Google from its navigation function.

This comes after an American tourist was shot and robbed after Google Maps had taken him through the township. Earlier in the year a British tourist was shot and killed after driving through the area.

Google and the department of tourism are now working together to promote South Africa as a safe destination for foreign tourists.

Alistair Mokoena, the director of Google in South Africa was quoted as saying: ‘We have identified crime hotspots, and we [are] working to ensure that those crime hotspots do not form part of the route so that people are able to connect to their destinations safely. There is a specific area around the Nyanga, around the airport intersection [which] we [are] looking to ensure that doesn’t become a feature when we recommend the fastest possible routes.’
