A Namibian politician, Sisa Namandje, has said that the governing Swapo party will rule Namibia “forever’.
Namandje, who is also a member of Swapo’s politburo and central committee, said that a Government of National Unity (GNU), as has been formed in neighbouring South Africa, will never happen in Namibia.
He was quoted by The Namibian newspaper as saying: “Don’t get excited for things happening somewhere, saying it will happen here. Never. It will never happen.”
Namandje had been speaking at an election rally in Rundu in northern Namibia.
Presidential and parliamentary elections are due to be held in Namibia in November. While election polling is uncommon in the country, analysts believe that Swapo could come close to losing its parliamentary majority. There is also a chance that in the parallel presidential election, a Swapo candidate could lose for the first time since independence.
