Ying Yang, a panda in captivity in Hong Kong, has given birth to twin cubs. The birth is notable, as at 19, Ying Yang is the oldest panda on record to give birth.

According to the BBC, this would be the equivalent of a 57-year-old human giving birth.

The cubs, a male and a female, are in intensive care with concern especially over the female, who only weighs 122g.

Pandas are notoriously reluctant to mate and there have been concerns over their population for years. However, conservation efforts have begun to pay off, and the species is now considered “vulnerable” rather than “endangered”.
