A temporary roof could be added to Cape Town Stadium to allow it to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) match.
The Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said that it would cost about R30 million and that engineers from the city had already provided four potential temporary roof options.
The city is looking to host the next match of South African UFC champion, Dricus du Plessis. Venues which host such matches need to be indoors and protected from adverse weather.
Hill-Lewis was quoted as saying: “We are already some way down the road… When it became a possibility that we could pitch a Dricus fight, we started working on a plan immediately, because we know that an indoor venue is a non-negotiable requirement of the UFC.”
Hill-Lewis said that if the project went ahead, the roof could be completed by March next year. However, Johannesburg and Pretoria have also expressed an interest in hosting Du Plessis’s next fight.
