Tanzania has denied a report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that there has been an outbreak of the Marburg virus.

This week the WHO said that there had been nine suspected cases in the country, resulting in eight deaths.

The Marburg virus causes a haemorrhagic fever, similar to that caused by the Ebola virus. Outbreaks in the past have had fatality rates of between 25% and 90%, with most outbreaks resulting in the deaths of half the people infected. It is spread to humans through fruit bats.

However, the Tanzanian health ministry denied the claims by the WHO saying that the samples analysed didn’t show the presence of the Marburg virus.
