The typewritten draft lyrics for Bob Dylan’s 1965 song Mr Tambourine Man netted $508,000 in an auction in the US.
The BBC reports that the lyrics, over two sheets of yellowed paper, are three drafts of the song, though not the final version. The work in progress features the folk-rock legend’s marginal hand-written notes.
The draft pages were among 60 items belonging to the singer that went under the hammer in Nashville, Tennessee.
Also on sale were a 1968 oil painting signed by Dylan, and a 1983 Fender Telecaster electric guitar owned and played by him.
With the draft lyrics for Mr Tambourine Man was a first-hand account by music journalist Al Aronowitz’s of Dylan writing the song in Aronowitz’s home in March 1964.
Aronowitz said Dylan had spent the night writing and rewriting the song on the journalist’s typewriter.
