A number of Kenyan activists have been deported from Tanzania, with the country’s president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying she will not tolerate “chaos”.

This comes after the leader of Tanzania’s largest opposition party, Tundu Lissu, has been charged with treason. A number of activists and lawyers from Kenya had come to Tanzania to support Lissu in his trial. However, they were deported before they could attend the hearing.

Hassan was quoted as saying: “If they have been contained in their country, let them not come here to meddle. Let’s not give them a chance. They have already created chaos in their own country.”

Tanzania has increasingly been cracking down on the political opposition ahead of elections scheduled to be held in October.

If Lissu is found guilty he could face the death penalty.
