Daniel Arap Moi, the former President of Kenya, has died at the age of 95.

Arap Moi was the country’s second President, succeeding Jomo Kenyatta, who died in 1978. He governed Kenya with an iron fist until losing an election in 2002. Kenya was a one-party state until 1992 when multi-party democracy was introduced.

Arap Moi has a mixed legacy. He is widely acknowledged as having helped Kenya remain peaceful and stable through a turbulent period of East African history. However, there were widespread human rights abuses while he governed, as well as widescale corruption, much of which he benefited from personally.

Uhuru Kenyatta, the current Kenyan President, announced a national period of mourning, ahead of a state funeral.
