The EFF’s offshoot in Zimbabwe has endorsed incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa of ZANU-PF ahead of elections in August.

The Zimbabwean branch of the EFF will not field a candidate but will rather back Mnangagwa. The EFF’s leader in Zimbabwe, Innocent Ndibali Sibanda, was quoted by News24 as saying: ‘He is the only president who will ensure continuity in land expropriation without compensation, and the protection of the non-negotiable Zimbabwe sovereignty.’

In May the leader of the EFF in South Africa, Julius Malema, criticised Mnangagwa for jailing opposition activists. He has in the past been supportive of ZANU-PF and its leaders.

The Zimbabwean EFF will be standing in its first election in August.

There is also an outpost of the EFF in Namibia. In 2019 the Namibian version of the Red Berets won 1.7% of the vote in that country’s last general election. Swaziland also has a franchise of the EFF, which was formed in 2020.
