2030 Football World Cup to be held on three continents

The 2030 Football World Cup is set to be held across three continents, as part of the global sports showpiece’s centenary.

The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by three countries: Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. The opening matches of the tournament will be held in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina.

The matches in South America are being held to mark the tournament’s 100-year anniversary. The inaugural tournament was held in Uruguay in 1930, with all the matches being played in the capital, Montevideo.

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, football’s global governing body, said: ‘In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents – Africa, Europe and South America – six countries – Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay – welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup.’

The decision will be confirmed at a FIFA congress next year.

All six host teams will automatically qualify for the 2030 tournament. It will be the second tournament where 48 national teams will participate.
