Panyaza Lesufi, the Premier of Gauteng, said that the Gautrain network would be expanded.
He was speaking last week in his state-of-the-province address.
Lesufi said the expansion is likely to begin in 2026 when the concession agreement between the Gauteng government and Bombela comes to an end.
The route expansion could include new stations in Boksburg and East Rand Mall linked to the existing Rhodesfield station; new stations to the west of the city in Randburg and Roodepoort; as well as links to Lanseria airport, and other suburbs in the north-west of the city, including Fourways and Sunninghill.
The Gauteng government said that the expansion of the system could be a significant economic boost to the province.
