Black Friday spending increased slightly from 2024 recorded spending, shown by Capitec and Standard Bank data.

Approved online purchases increased by more than 11% compared to 2024, a total spending of 14%, while contactless payments accounted for 50% of all transactions, the Citizen reports.

According to Standard Bank data the provinces that saw the most spending was Limpopo, 25% more compared to 2024, and the Western Cape, 17% more. The leading sectors were groceries, convenience retailers, and restaurants.

Standard Bank recorded a 7.2% increase in spending value on Black Friday and 17% increase on Cyber Monday and a major increase of 75% of online spending value.

Capitec with slightly higher increase in spending compared to 2024, showed a 14% of increase in spending value on Black Friday, and only 43% increase on online spending value.

The largest amount, R3 million, spent on travel and entertainment paid through PayInc, and the second largest was R1.09 million also paid for travel spent on Peach Payments.

CEO and cofounder of Peach Payments, Rahul Jain, said: “Over the four-day weekend we processed more than 2.69 million transactions, to a value of more than R1.86 billion.”

Head of marketing at PayInc, Solly Bellingan, said: “One consumer spent R3 million in a single click on travel and entertainment. This year’s Black Friday spending showed that shoppers used this day as an opportunity to secure big-ticket items.”
