The Kremlin has given a rare public endorsement of a United States national security strategy, saying President Donald Trump’s newly released plan aligns closely with Russia’s own worldview.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the document “corresponds in many ways to our vision,” marking an unusual moment of convergence between the two powers, according to reporting from Reuters. The strategy outlines Trump’s idea of “flexible realism,” calls for reviving the Monroe Doctrine, warns of “civilisational erasure” in Europe and identifies negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine as a core US interest. It also signals Washington’s intent to rebuild strategic stability with Moscow.

Peskov noted the strategy’s pledge to curb perceptions of NATO as a “perpetually expanding alliance” and described it as encouraging. He added a warning that what he called the US “deep state” may not share Trump’s approach. Critics say the term refers to a baseless conspiracy theory.

The response from Moscow contrasts with the tone of recent US strategies, which have labelled Russia an aggressor following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Peskov told the TASS news agency that shifting from casting Russia as a direct threat to calling for cooperation on strategic stability was a positive step.

The document also names the Indo-Pacific as a crucial geopolitical battleground and commits to bolstering US and allied military power to deter China over Taiwan. Russia has accelerated its pivot to China since the imposition of Western sanctions.

Trump has previously said the United States should avoid driving Russia and China closer together, describing their alignment as strategically dangerous.
