Glencoe farmer Garth Simpson, charged with the murder last month of Qiniso Dlamini as well as of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, has been denied bail.

The presiding magistrate said in his ruling that the defence had not established exceptional circumstances that would require bail, according to a report in the Northern Natal News. Neither Simpson’s advanced age nor his poor health qualified here.

The magistrate also referred to warnings that the community would be incensed by the granting of bail. (During the bail hearing the investigating officer warned that the situation would be uncontrollable.)

The case has been postponed to 25 November.
