In this episode of the ‘Solutions With David Ansara’ podcast, I speak with economic analyst and social commentator, Phumlani Majozi, about how to liberate South Africa’s economy.

Phumlani and I discuss how government policies that are hostile to the private sector damage the economy. This is most evident in South Africa’s rigid labour market, which has caused a dramatic rise in joblessness and social dislocation.

Phumlani believes that South Africa’s extensive welfare system breeds dependency on the state, and that we need to do more to create economic opportunities for poor South Africans. Instead of the government’s current Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy, we should rather promote a non-racial version of empowerment, he says.

We also speak about how South Africa should approach the issue of immigration, as well as how to deal with the country’s high levels of violent crime. How will South Africa’s politics change in the aftermath of the 2024 elections, I ask?

We conclude the conversation by reflecting on the importance of taking personal responsibility.
