Emmanual Macron, the President of France, has said that Europe faces its greatest threat to its freedom since World War II.
He was speaking to French armed forces in Paris, where he said the world was at a “pivotal moment”.
He also said that French defence spending should increase, adding that he wanted spending to rise by €3.5 billion next year and €3 billion the year after.
This would bring France’s annual defence budget to €64 billion by 2027.
Macron said: “To be free in this world, you must be feared. To be feared, you must be powerful.”
