John Stegmann
John Stegmann, with Bill Mylrea, co-founded the Western Province Pedal Power Association in 1976 – to advance cycling for all those interested in using bicycles for recreation, commuting or touring – and the Argus Cycle Tour in 1978, to reinforce the argument for a network of car-safe, practical and enjoyable bicycle paths. Stegmann led the team that produced the approved 1979 network, and, in 1996, proposed a 350km cycleway between George and Gqeberha. He co-founded the Garden Route Cycleway Association in 2006, which competed with The Friends of the Choo Tjoe for the use of the branch line reserve of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe line between George and Knysna. He is the author of THE GREEN MACHINE, a self-published history of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
