Three Tanzanian soldiers died in a mortar attack on their base in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The soldiers were members of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping force which is currently in the eastern DRC.

According to reports, the mortar attack happened over the weekend. It also saw three Tanzanians wounded, along with the three Tanzanian soldiers that lost their lives.

The SADC force, which includes South African troops, was invited to the DRC by the country’s government in the face of a rapidly deteriorating security situation in the east of the country.

No group has been identified as being responsible for the attack, although the M23 rebel group, which is widely believed to be backed by Rwanda, is the most likely culprit. M23 has been responsible for much of the recent violence and unrest in the region.
