Do South Africans believe their president should be black?
This is among the questions the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) put to a representative sample of South Africans in its latest opinion survey, the details – and methodology – of which form the substance of tomorrow’s webinar with Hermann Pretorius, IRR head of strategic communication and lead author of the report on the findings.
Among them are that while only 23% of respondents said they would only support a black president, fully 66% said they would support the best person, regardless of race.
Other topical subjects covered in the survey include:
- Whether South Africans share President Donald Trump’s view that “white genocide” is occurring in the country, and
- Whether South Africans approve of the government using race to classify citizens.
The polling was conducted between 9 and 20 March among a representative sample of 1,038. With a confidence interval of 95%, the findings have a margin of error of 3%.
