Major General Ashton Sibango
Major General Ashton Mlindeni Sibango (Retired) left active service on 30 January 2020 after having served for an unbroken period of 39 years in the military. He was commissioned as an officer in the Transkei Defence Force in 1984, and left the South African National Defence Force as the Chief of Staff at Joint Operations Division. Sibango was filled various positions in the SANDF, ranging from Defence Attaché in Malaysia to Mission Commander for the delivery of the ballot papers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He devoted much of his career to peace-building initiatives in a number of countries in Africa.
